The home espresso is often referred to as chasing the rainbow.

Anyone who's been to a sub-standard cafe can see how easy it is to get it wrong from professionals.

So, here are some good tips for getting the best out of your Decadent Decaf coffee through an Espresso machine.

Which decaffeinated coffees work best for espresso?

Although the Signature Espresso Blend and the Decadent Decaf Dark Roast Blend are better suited for the more traditional style of espresso making, the little known fact is that all the range can provide different tasting espresso coffee.

For example, the Guatemala provides a wonderfully bright espresso, with the Ethiopia & Costa Rica more floral and fruity and the Colombia has a nutty chocolate note.

Brew Ratio

We generally recommend starting with a 1:2 brewing ratio, within a time of over 20 seconds and under 30 seconds.

This equates to roughly 18g of ground coffee to 36g of espresso.

Brew Temperature

We brew at 93 deg. However these things are very much subjective and dependent on machinery. 

Target Output Weights

We actually do enjoy pulling the Guatemala, Ethiopia & Costa Rica at more of a ristretto style, which is a 1:1.2 ratio.  

This would be roughly 18g ground coffee to 22g of Espresso.

Tips & Tricks

Tightening up the grind and pouring a thicker, gloopier poor can intensity the richness and tone down the brightness somewhat.

Pouring a longer espresso, say, 1:2.5 or more, will bring out some brighter notes and acidity.

What’s most important?

The important part is to keep an open mind, trust your taste buds & tweak that grinder.....and enjoy the journey.

The golden rule is that there is no wrong way to make it, provided you ENJOY it!
