Can I drink coffee while pregnant?
Yes, you can drink coffee whilst pregnant, but it's important to be cautious and monitor your caffeine intake.
According to the NHS medical organisation in the United Kingdom, if you’re pregnant, you should really limit the amount of caffeine to 200 milligrams a day, which is the equivalent of one cup of filter coffee or 2 cups of instant coffee.
So, you should definitely limit caffeine during pregnancy.
High levels of caffeine during pregnancy can result in babies having a low birth weight, which can increase the risk of health problems in later life.
Caffeine can also increase the risk of a miscarriage. Indeed, recent research even suggests it may be a good idea to stop consuming caffeine completely during the pregnancy.
So, how much caffeine is a cup of coffee and other drinks?
The amount of caffeine found in some drinks are as follows:
- one mug of instant coffee is 100 milligrams
- one mug of filter coffee is 140 milligrams
- one mug of tea is 75 milligrams
- one can of cola is 40 milligrams
- one can of energy drink is 80 milligram
This is where decaffeinated coffee can be very useful for pregnant mothers.

In 2020, a new scientific study advised pregnant women to avoid caffeine completely
The scientific study was conducted by Reykjavik University in Iceland and published in in the BMJ Evidence Based Medicine Journal.
The research was a “study of studies” where the scientists examined data from 37 previous observational studies on caffeine and pregnancy.
After analysing data from 37 studies, they then used Big Data analysis and found that caffeine significantly increased the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes including stillbirth, miscarriage and low birth weight, as well as a higher chance of children being overweight or obese when born to mothers who consume caffeine during pregnancy.
