Café Bombón

We are continuing our series of recipe related blog post, this time the recipes take us to Spain and Vietnam.

Now the question is are you looking to shake up your coffee drink a bit and perhaps you have a bit of sweet tooth? Then why not try a café Bombón. This sweet, delicious drink that is also referred to as a Spanish latte originates from the beautiful city of Valencia and from there it spread to the rest of Spain.

Due to its sweet flavour and richness (from the condensed milk), it’s often served up after a meal as dessert. 

So how do you make a café Bombón

Start by pouring a strong espresso into a glass (I’d recommend doing a double shot), you then added the sweetened condensed milk and top of with whipped cream.

 If you fancy making it extra decadent, and well we think you do, then the below recipe is the way to go.

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup espresso
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 4 tablespoons cacao powder 

Start of by adding the vanilla extract to the cream and whip until it forms soft peaks. 

Brew 8 ounces of espresso coffee.

Pour the coffee equally into 4 small glass cups. Add the condensed milk to the coffee, roughly 2 liquid ounces per glass. As the condensed milk is heavier than the coffee it will sink to the bottom, then top with whipped cream.

Finally, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder over each cup and make sure to serve with a spoon. You need to stir the drink well as to mix the condensed milk and whipped cream with the coffee so the sweetness and the boldness marry and create a perfect blend.

Café Canario

Now in the Canary Islands they have taken the café Bombón to the next level and created the Café Canario. The café Canario is the adults only version of the Bombón. Additionally, to the standard ingredients of a Bombón you add Licor 43 (a bright yellow, vanilla flavored Spanish liqueur), ground up cinnamon and a slice of lemon peel.

Not only is it delicious but it also looks a treat as the layers lie separately in the cup.

Vietnamese iced coffee

Serve a Bombón up cold and it will most likely be called a Vietnamese iced coffee (or cà phê đá). This is simple a combination of either drip coffee or a double shot of espresso with condensed milk mixed with lots of ice. Make sure to use a dark roast coffee if you’re going to do a drip coffee as your coffee needs to have a bit of oomph to it, or the condensed milk will overpower the flavour of the coffee.
