Today, we’re going to ask the question:
Can caffeine cause adrenal fatigue?
The answer is yes, caffeine can negatively affect the adrenal glands. For more information on caffeine and adrenal fatigue, please read on further.
Modern life is overly busy, frenetic and this can result in people being constantly on alert and this is not helped by caffeine. For some people, this can result in adrenal fatigue.
But, first of all, what is adrenal fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue describe the condition in which adrenal glands are exhausted and unable to produce adequate quantities of hormones, such as glucocorticoid cortisol, often due to chronic stress.
How can caffeine affect adrenal fatigue?
Caffeine stimulates neuron activity in the brain and neurons send messages to the pituitary gland to stimulate the adrenal glands, which then produces adrenaline and cortisol.
Adrenaline and cortisol are those famous hormones, which increase in the body when you are faced with danger, stress or surprise.
They are stress hormones, for use in emergencies, but often, in modern life, they are overused.
If your adrenal glands are fatigued, then caffeine can cause your adrenals to overwork to make more cortisol and stress the adrenal gland.
This leads to your adrenal gland being weakened and less able to respond adequately.
This is why coffee has less and less effect over time on people with adrenal fatigue.
So, caffeine has its downsides and, if you are have the symptoms of adrenal fatigue, then it is sensible to reduce your caffeine consumption.
If I have adrenal fatigue, how should I reduce my caffeine consumption?
One way to reduce your caffeine consumption is to replace your caffeinated regular coffee with decaffeinated coffee.
You can also blend your regular caffeinated coffee with decaffeinated coffee to make a half caffeine coffee blend.
If you plan to cut caffeine out of your diet, then it is advisable to do this slowly because stopping your caffeine intake immediately can cause headaches, tiredness and other side-effects.
We recommend the Swiss Water Process of decaffeination, which uses water (no chemicals) to decaffeinate the coffee beans and is 99.9% caffeine free.
